Army rule the waves

The 2nd May saw the conclusion of the 2009 Inter-Services competition. It was a glorious morning at Knellar Hall in Twickenham; the pitch was in perfect condition for a fast flowing game.

After the result against the RAF (72-0 to the Army) and the result of the RAF Navy fixture (36-0 to the RAF) confidence was high within the Army squad.

That was soon to be put right by the Navy, the Army kicked off up hill away from Twickenham, which saw a ruck on the Navy 10 metre line nervousness or over keen which ever way it resulted in a knock on by the Navy.

First scrum of the game both packs eyeing each other for the forthcoming confrontation, perfect position for the backs to attack from; the referee judged that the Army had fed the scrum penalty against. A good clearance by the Navy resulted in a line out on the Army's 5 metre line. The Army put in place one of its many defensive plays into motion, up went Cpl Rosie Haigh and stole the ball. A quick ruck and the ball was passed down the back line to Cpl Alvi Beaney and a clear break to the Navy 22, from the ensuing ruck a penalty was awarded for offside, a clearance kick to touch set up the platform to deliver a wide striking move, with fast hands saw the ball reach the far side of the pitch, a series of quick rucks and some good hands, it was only a matter of time before the Army would cross the line.

The Navy's defence was strong and they repeatedly repelled the Army attack. From a lineout within the Navy half, off the top ball to Cpl Sarah Roper who hit a hard attacking line. From a quick ruck and some soft hands saw Lt Rebecca (Sonic) Homer score in the corner. Conversion was successful by Cpl Sarah Roper Army 7- 0.

From the kick off the Army cleared their lines and pushed the Navy back which resulted in a knock on 15 meters away from the Navy line, a quick pick from the base of the scrum by Captain Kat Woods, and a pass to Lt Elaine Radcliffe then onto Cpl Alvi Beaney who scored in the corner conversion missed
Army 12- 0.

From the kick off the Navy pinned the Army in there own 22, a clearance kick to touch found the Army on there own 10 metre, with a lineout to the Navy which was stolen by Cpl Rosie Haigh who passed down to Capt Aimee Bywater-Lutman who set up a ruck, Lt Elaine Radcliffe passed to flyhalf Capt Emilie Astley-Arlington who executed a long kick to open space which followed up by England International LCpl Jane Leonard who recovered the ball and off loaded to Cpl Sarah Roper who attacked with good leg drive and a line break a good offload to England A Centre Cpl Sarah Hudson who scored in the corner Army 17- 0.

A good clean catch from the restart saw the Army put together 5 phase's which resulted in LCpl Jane Leonard going wide and scoring in the corner for her first of three for the morning.

Half time Army 22 Navy 0

What many people reading this will not realise is that the only options open to the Army was to attack out wide; the Navy’s defence of the middle of the pitch was like going at a blockade ships which repeatedly repelled the Army Attacks.

From the restart the Army really wanted to put the Navy away, but with the tenacious defence by the Navy this was not going to be easy, what followed was probably the best try of the season. The ball was carried in to contact by Capt Charlie Maxwell a Quick Ruck, the ball was fed to Capt Kelly Douglas another Quick Ruck, through several sets of hand to see Cpl Lisa Joseph score in the corner started by a prop and finished by a prop superb team play. Army 27- 0.

From this restart the Navy carried the ball well and put some good phase play which resulted in them reaching the Army 22, and them being awarded a penalty for hands in the ruck, they elected to kick the 3 points which was unsuccessful.

The rest of the second half was much the same as the first, resilient defence by the Navy forcing the Army to attack the wide channels which resulted in a further 5 try's by LCpl Jane Leonard (2) making it a hat trick, Capt Becky Hewlett (2) Cpl Sarah Hudson For her 2nd of the game, and 4 successful conversions by Sgt Kerri Tuck.

Final score Army 60 - 0 Navy.

This was a good performance by the Army and sealed a good season, congratulations to the Navy for a very sound display of defence and having a never say die attitude.

Player of the match was awarded to Cpl Sarah Roper.

New cap awarded to SSgt Caroline Wilde.

Inter-Services Championship 2009
Army Women (72) v RAF Women (0)
Aldershot - 15 Apr 09

Reporter/Photographer: Roger Thompson

The Army's successful season continued with a convincing 72 pts-nil win over the Royal Air Force at Aldershot. The opening try by England's flanker Jane Leonard set the tone for a spirited and fast moving match where the less experienced Air Force never lost heart.

Skipper and No8 Kat Woods led Leonard and No6 Kelly Douglas in controlling the ball in the hand and, at every contact point, set the rucks up nicely for the arrival of the heavy brigade. It was a well-drilled forward effort that gave centres Sarah Roper and Sarah Hudson plenty of space to attack down the shortest distance to the posts. Where thespaced was closed down-they reopened it.

The Army back three included 'Sonic' Homer who has a Scotland pedigree at full back, Alvi Beaney and the pacey Dani Phand who scored a couple of 'fizzers' on the outside. The combination was more than the Air Force could handle on a dry warm afternoon.

One word of praise for the unsung hero normally found buried at the bottom of an unseemly heap. Charlie Maxwell, loose head prop, featured in every match photograph-now that is prop-er support !

The Army had power and pace to spare but it was the 'rugby brain', slick drills and commitment that made this game stand out probably more than most. Well done to WO2 Dean Lewis and his team.

It is important to remember Army Women's rugby is ten years old only. The 'grills' have come a fantastic way in that short period and are well worth watching. Next up versus the Royal Navy at Kneller Hall at 1030 hrs on 2 May.

Army Women (18) v Ulster Women (0)
RAF Aldergrove - 3 March 2009

The Army women met on Tuesday 3rd March in RAF Aldergrove for there 2nd game of this year, with Scotland behind us and the wheels being firmly back on the wagon, the training went smoothly and we smoothed some rough edges of our new style of play.

The scene was set for what the coaches hoped would be a fluid game; the first stumbling block came as the Ulster coaches arrived and stated they would like to play 4 quarters, we realised that this may upset the fluidity of the team.

Players briefed on what was happening and of we went, the referee had given a good brief on how he wanted the game to be played on your feet and Ulster obviously had not listened because within 15 minutes they were down to 14, the Army capitalised on this with 2 tries being scored by Cpl's Alvi Beaney and Sarah Roper, and they were both superbly taken. Quick ball generated by the forwards some quick hands by the backs of catch draw and pass (the basics done simply).

The 2nd quarter saw the coaches ring some changes and of we went again hoping for more of the same and they weren't disappointed, the forwards now playing with more confidence and really taking it the Ulster forwards saw Cpl Lisa Joseph make a break and move like a winger over 40 meters to score what she believed to be the best try ever only for the referee to call her back and award the Army a scrum. From the resulting scrum the backs moved the ball wide were Lt Rebecca (Sonic) Homer which found her in open space with support which was not required as she easily crossed the white wash. Ulster disheartened by this gave away a penalty in front of the post which the captain Cpl Sarah Hudson elected to kick, so up stepped Sgt Kerri Tuck who slotted it straight through the middle. This ended the 2nd quarter 18-0.

The next 2 quarters saw Ulster push hard and really push the Armies defence to the limits, any spectator who had watched the British police match before Christmas would have expected Ulster to cross the line but not now with the Armies new found composure. It will take a highly committed and skilful team to penetrate the Armies defence close to the line now.

The game finished and result of 18-0 sitting quite comfortably with players and reflecting on last years result of 10-8 we can now say the wheels are firmly back on and the nuts are starting to tightened, in preparation for the inter-services.

The Army play one more fixture before the inter-services start on the 15th April with the Army v RAF at Aldershot.

I would just like to say well done to all the players who played in this match, you all played exceptionally well.

Army Women (28) v Scotland Development (10)
Dunbar - 7 Feb 2009

This was the first game of 2009 after the Bristol game was cancelled due to frozen pitches.

With all the weather south of the border we all thought that it would eventually reach sunny but cold Edinburgh on the day of the game and that it would be cancelled, but upon awaking on the Saturday morning to a crisp layer of snow it was not looking hopeful, however luck was on our side and the pitch had thawed enough to play upon.

It was a bitter cold but sunny afternoon in Dunbar, Scotland won the toss and decided to play into the wind.

The talk amongst the squad this week had been have a positive attitude, and this is what the army had from the outset, we kicked long and applied pressure straight away forcing Scotland to knock on from the ensuing scrum we picked from the base and drove hard and just kept applying pressure through the forwards until Lt Emily Astley-Arlington the fly half had ensure the field position was right to launch her fellow backs. This pressure told upon Scotland with them constantly fringing and the army being awarded penalties time and time again. From a resulting penalty a line out was formed just inside the Scotland 22, the forward called for a pre-arranged move and of they went it was straight of the training paddock, Capt Kelly Douglas swooped around the front of the line stepped the unsuspecting hooker for a easy stroll over the try line, the following conversion was successful from on the touch line by LCpl Jane Leonard.
Army 7-0.

From the restart Scotland never made the 10 which resulted in a scrum to the army on half way, from this LCpl Claire Loftus playing at No8 (whilst inspirational skipper Capt Kat Woods recovers from a Injury) picked and went right and drove deep into the Scotland half, the forwards were following the game plan to a tee working hard and setting up quick rucks for scrumhalf Jane Leonard to deliver the ball to the backs (sometimes like Bergamasco but not as bad). With more pressure applied to Scotland and some forays into the Scotland half by forwards and backs it was inevitable that there would be 2v1 situation some where and when Lt Rebecca Homer found it in support was Cpl Carice Allen to step over the try line and score, conversion was unsuccessful.

Army 13-0.

From the restart Scotland again could not make the 10 and a scrum was awarded, from this scrum the backs elected to take first phase and from this the Scotland captain was caught of side for the umpteenth time and was yellow carded, this left them short in the pack.

From the resulting clearance kick deep into the Scotland 22, as they set a ruck and we countered they infringed which resulted in the Army kicking for touch, from the line out Scotland competed and won the ball as the Army applied pressure they knocked on from the resulting scrum the ball was passed out using simple hands to LCpl Dani Phan to score in the corner the third try conversion unsuccessful.

Army 18-0

From the restart Scotland did not make 10 from the resulting scrum they infringed Jane Leonard took a quick tap penalty set a quick ruck quick hands down the line to Carice Allen to score in the corner. Conversion unsuccessful.

Army 23-0

From the restart Scotland got it right and kicked deep into our 22 Cpl Emma Gilbert caught the ball and charged back into the Scottish defence from the ruck Major Maggie Anne-Hodge drove the ball in to set a quick ruck up the ball is passed swiftly to the backs and with simple hands. A little chip which the Scotland fullback knocked on and from the resulting scrum Claire Loftus picked up from the base of the scrum who then fed Jane Leonard who surged in to the Scottish defence just before contact she passed to Claire Loftus who ran in untouched. Conversion unsuccessful.

Army 28-0.

Halftime

The Army came out firing in the second half maybe a bit too keen, as we seem to pick up penalty after penalty which resulted in a yellow card being shown to Lt Rowena Squire’s harsh decision. This meant some early substitutions Lt Gemma Masson was replaced by Capt Charlotte Maxwell.

And it just goes to show what being down to 14 players can do because Scotland then scored two tries quickly.
Army 28-10 Scotland.

Once the Army was back to 15 players there line was held firm and both teams pushed and pulled but with no other score to either team.

The plan and style we have been striving for is now starting to come to fruition.

Well done to all the players for all their hard effort during the week and especially the game.

Army Women (0) v Police (18)
Police Smash And Grab
12 Dec 08

Reporter/photographer: Roger Thompson

The Army Women went down 18 pts-0 to a British Police team brimming with international and premiership talent. The Police having lost the last three pre-Christmas encounters were definitely 'hungry' and crossed the start-line with venom.

In frequently driving rain the Reds pack defended with composure and some mighty tackling. A rampant Police eight literally had to smash down the front door to take a 5 pt lead just before the break.

The 'Peelers' had consistently elected to kick for position and use their powerful pack to drive and drive. It paid off. With considerable all-round strength and patience in the sticky conditions they kept the ball away from fresh air until the loose head prop Marie Hollingsworth crashed over at short range. It was a symbolic moment worth more than 5 points.

In the first half the Army had adopted a somewhat different strategy choosing to move forward through the back row. Skipper Kat Woods (QARANC) at No8, Jane Leonard (RE) and Kelly Douglas (AGC) took the ball into early contact hoping quick release would release centres Sarah Hudson (RLC) and Rebecca 'Sonic' Homer to run at the Police cordon - but it wasn't that sort of an afternoon. Too frequently the ball was spilled before contact or the thunder hooves failed to grip the turf. There will come better days for such tactics.

Surprisingly in the second half the Reds adopted a policy of ‘no discernable change’. A good ‘hoof’ high into the rain cloud would on many occasions have gained more than pretty passing and yet more mini-drives. Instead the Army ‘fiddle-faddled’ around in their own ‘22’ and failed to build any position from where to exert critical pressure.
England international Jane Leonard creates space

In fairness the Reds never wilted and in the last quarter established a little ‘edge’. Tight Head Prop Lisa Joseph (AAC) and replacement lock Natasha Grant (RA) crashed into the affray. Successive quick balls saw the Army attack convincingly for the first time. With replacement scrum half Nancy Kuva (AGC) calling the shots, the backs ran smoothly against a tiring Police defence and with an overlap the Reds should have scored. However despite strong running by replacement centre Liz Polson the ‘Peelers’ re-grouped, attacked down the right and with the ball sticking to quick hands blind-side Cheryl Blanch ran in a very good try.

For the ‘glass half full’ brigade this defeat might, with a lot of luck and at the right time, have been a victory. But, the British Police adapted well to the torrid conditions, symbolically they scored the first try and kicked a penalty in front of the posts. It wasn’t the sort of afternoon for taking risks playing catch-up—and the Army didn’t.

Army Women (7) v OA Saints (10)
Memorial fixture 2008
18 Oct 08

The second development game for the ARU (W) saw us take on OA Saints (OA's) in the second memorial fixture in the memory of one of there former players.

The squad assembled at RAF Uxbridge on Wednesday evening 15 November, Training began on the Thursday morning in Ernst with only 5 sessions to iron out the problems from the Trials game and to start building the basis of the game plan for this season.

Training went well and all the players through feedback to the new team manager said it had gone well.

So onto the game, we arrived at OA's on a glorious day the climate was perfect for what promised to be a good fixture.

OA's really now how to remember a past player with a festive of rugby all around and the fixture between themselves and the ARU (W) being the main event of the day.

OA's kicked of and went straight for it pressuring the Army from the of and they were relentless, continually pinning us back, with this amount of pressure it was before long that the Army committed a infringement in front of the posts which the OA's kicker dutifully put between the posts 3 - 0 OA's.

From this point on the Army spent the rest of the half in there 22 until against the run of play OA's gave us a penalty which Lt Rebecca Homer kicked down field for a line out 30 out from OA's line a good ball of the top saw the Army forge deep into the 22 which resulted in a quick tap and go a quick ruck ensued and a quick pass to LCpl Joulandi Joubert saw her cut through the defences and score under the post and with a simple kick for sonic to add the extra's 7-3 Army, this saw us through to the half time break.

A few pointers from the coaches and the team were ready to go again.

The Army came out on a mission and forge well through the backs and forwards but to no avail OA's stood strong and kept kicking us back down the field until we had to touch a ball down behind the try line which resulted in a 5mtr scrum which saw them execute a training field drill which came of a dream for them scoring under the posts which they converted 10-7 OA's.

The Army had a few chances in the later part of the half but it was just the last pass or the bounce of the ball that let them down the game finished 10-7 to OA's.

This is a great fixture for the Army Women, OA's are playing some good rugby this season and this reflected in there current positioning within there own league and we wish all the best for the remainder of the season.

The Army played well and have few things to work on for there next outing against Salisbury on the 19 Nov at Salisbury 1930 KO.

Well done to all a superb defensive display.
