Lt Col Eilean Cunningham (Chairman ARUW)), General Sir Richard Dannatt KCB CBE MC ADC Gen (ARU President),
Gill Burns MBE (President of RFU for Women (RFUW))

The ARU was delighted that Gill could join us for the President’s Dinner – she is an inspirational leader and an excellent ambassador for women’s rugby at every level. In her rugby career she gained 73 caps for England at number 8 over the period 1989 to 2002, as well as being capped for Great Britain. She made her debut against Sweden at Waterloo and finished her international playing career against New Zealand in the Rugby World Cup Final in 2002. She is currently the President of the Rugby Football Union for Women and continues to shape the future of the international game.

Gill was born and bred in the Northwest, and began her playing career at Liverpool Polytechnic in 1987, before moving to Waterloo to establish a women’s rugby team in 1989. She has represented Waterloo Ladies ever since and is a Past President of Waterloo RFC (which we believe means that she was the first women to hold such an appointment). Gill was awarded an MBE for services to both men’s and women’s rugby last year.
