During their recent tour to Kenya (17-18 Jun 06) the Army Sevens squad
had an opportunity to visit the Bethlehem school, in the village of Sowetho,
on the outskirts of Nairobi. The squad were accompanied on their visit
by the Defence Attaché and the Project Officer from the British High Commission.
The school was home to over 200 children, the majority of who were orphans
due to the HIV virus. Every child wanted attention and love and all wanted
to have their hand held.
After the visit one of the teachers, Mary Gakembu sent the team the following
message and pictures:
We hope and pray that you are all doing fine. We are
all fine and still possess that great feeling we had
the day you visited us. The smiles on the children's
faces still linger in my mind when I recall what a
wonderful moment you shared with them. You just made
their day. We would wish that you organize such
frequent visits and have some time with them. Nowadays
rugby has become part of their play games and they
still have the balls that you gave them. We are also
grateful for all the gifts that you gave the children.
May God continue to bless the work of your hands.
Attached are the photos showing what a great day it was to the children
and all the smiles you left planted in their faces. You are doing a
commendable job remembering the less fortunate in the society and indeed
God will continually bless you and your families. We are grateful too
to the British High Commission for connecting us with generous people
like you. God Bless you all. Thank you for keeping in touch. Waiting
to hear from the boys.
Mary
