BA (G) (13) v Belgium (26) 3 March 2007
Reporter: Ian Davies, Head of Coaching
"South seas, fast flowing rugby, that they couldn't deal with,"
was the way BA(G) Team Captain, Mark Unsworth,
on winning his BA(G) cap, described his teams' style after a momentous
match. "At half time we, the forwards, were told to get aggressive,
and that's what we did, we come out and did the hard work."
As they raised their arms in victory at the sound of the referees
whistle BA(G) knew that they had earned a victory that they would
remember for a long while to come. |
Belgium started the game at a furious pace and denied
BA(G) time and space. At every opportunity the Belgians turned BA(G)
and made them play from deep.

Throughout the first half Belgium pressurised BA(G) into mistakes
that saw them convert two of five penalty kicks and deservedly went
into the interval ahead. The first indication of life in the BA(G)
side came on the stroke of half time, taking the ball over the Belgian
goal line only for the officials to rule that the ball had been
held off the ground. But nothing indicated the power and passion
with which the home side opened the second period. Following what
can only have been direct words from the coaching staff BA(G) gelled,
their movement was flowing, cohesive, aggressive and more importantly
decisive. The ball was dispatched swiftly from the back of repeated
rucks giving the backs the opportunity to play rugby rather than
just defend. The sure footedness that had deserted them 2 weeks
before against Denmark had returned, and a resurgent ¾ line spread
the ball wide creating the overlap and Mocesui
charged over the opposition try line in the corner with just one
minute on the clock.

| No one watching the 1st half anticipated that BA(G) would open
the second half with such devastating power, the next score came within
3 minutes of the first. The BA(G) forwards tied up their opposite
numbers in a maul and quick recycling of the ball released Tomasi
to break through and score underneath the posts to put them ahead
for the first time in the game. Once ahead BA(G) never looked back
and with Belgium having to open the game up BA(G) ' s defensive system
created an interception in the 11th minute for JV Vimataki
to run in from his own 22 metre line to win the foot race and score
under the posts. This was duly converted to extend the lead to 19-
6. Belgium did however answer with a converted try of their own following a missed tackle by Lewavakula to bring them within striking distance but this did not deter the home side, that now had momentum behind them. From a scrum on their own 10 metre line they ran the ball through the backs and an inspired chip kick over the advancing Belgian defence resulted in Lewavakula making amends to score the fourth try for the BA(G) side extending their lead to 26- 13. |
|
| This was the final score and although BA(G) were reduced to 13 men due to 2 yellow cards in the last nine minutes the on field players held out a concerted and frantic last few minutes determined not to concede another try. |

Colonel Ritson Harrison summed up the feelings of BA(G) after the match, "Terrific!" he said, "The boys played extremely well, I know it's a reflection of all the hard work that has gone into it, however thanks must go to all the players Commanding officers for releasing their soldiers, without CO support my coaching staff cannot prepare properly and we do really appreciate their efforts in these challenging times" .
At the end of the game Col Harrison presented Mark Unsworth with his cap and made the Man of the match award to LBdr Nute from 4 Regt RA.

BA(G) (5) v Denmark (3)
28 February 2007
Reporter: Ian Davies, Head of Coaching
BA(G) defeated both the elements and Denmark with a score line
that flattered the visiting Danes. In monsoon conditions BA(G) were
unable to get their famed running game going and only last ditch
defence plus an off day for the hosts kickers kept the Danes in
touch.
With skipper L/Cpl Tuitubou SDG unavailable, Sgt
Mark Unsworth 12 Regt RA led the team in two good
days of preparation where all the players responded to coaches Capt
Nick Panter and WO2 Phil Davies
novel innovations. With all the Bdes back in Germany for the first
time in four seasons the Danes faced a strong competitive BA(G)
squad. For that all Commanding Officers of the selected players
are thanked. Despite the conditions both teams attempted to play
rugby and congratulations must go to ARURS referee John
Voss who managed both sides and the weather in his customary
player centred fashion. From the start BA(G) pressed hard with the
forwards making the hard yards, notable contributions came from
the returning Rowland and Gibbs
from 35 Engr and 16 Sig Regt respectively. With the all gunner back
row of Kaloutani, Qarau and winning
his BA(G) cap man mountain Ski Sauliga dominating
the loose play it was disappointing that BA(G) were not points up
at the interval. |
|
The three quarters with Wais Naituku returning
at Outside Half used his considerable skills to release his runners
however conditions were against them. |

The second half was a copy of the first with the
visitors holding out and it was only a matter of time before Qarau
scored in the corner. Despite all the players best efforts further
scores did not materialise. With several debutants in the side BA(G)
can look forward at the continuing development of the squad, newcomers
Tomasi 32 Engr Regt, Rokotaroko
1 PWRR, Yawayawa QRH and Nacakanacagi
4 SCOTS all displayed ability when they came on as well as in training,
the future looks very competitive for the team. The main outcome
was for the first time in several seasons BA(G) won ugly which pleased
all the coaching staff.

BA (G) (26) v Denmark (7)
21
October 2006
In a highly entertaining game BA(G) righted last seasons home performance and defeated Denmark in Frederica, much to the chagrin of the Danes who were left to cry into their lager. Thirteen players were making their debuts in the 22 and all took advantage to stake claims for the remainder of the season. |
A significant factor in the result was undoubtedly the valuable support
given by all the squads Commanding Officers (CO’s) by releasing
players to the BA(G) Coaching team early to train twice before the
match. This preparation was put to good effect and resulted in BA(G)
swarm all over Denmark for the first 15 minutes. Skipper Jim
Tuitubou SDG as usual led from the front with pack leader
Sgt Mark Unsworth 12 Regt RA in support, the early
blitz saw Gnr’s Koro and Kaloutani
rampage over the field and opened up play all over the place. From
an attacking scrum LBdr Nute 4 Regt RA broke blind
and fed debutant scrum half Kgns Tagicakivanua
who ran in from the 22.
|
|
Immediately from the kick off the forwards
worked the ball up field, good work from out of position L/Cpl
Rabuka 6 Sup at fly half broke free and released his backs
and BA (G) worked space for Gnr Mocesui to run
round the enemy 15 to score in the corner. The Danes fought back
and fortunately Army’s defence held true with L/Bdr Qarau
all action as usual from open side and Cfn Ramafono
2 CS Coy on debut making big hits to thwart attacks. One turnover
ball saw Gnr Mocesui show why he is close to full Army honours by
again running round his opposite number to score under the posts.
L/Cpl Lewavakula kicked the conversion. 17 – 0 at half
time saw the coaching team demand a greater effort and urgency sensing
that a real marker could be put down, emphasis was put on defence
and the front up tackles.
Straight after the interval turnover ball from a Nute ‘king hit’ saw BA(G) sweep up field for Lewavakula to score. To the Danes credit they fought back and only a tremendous covering tackle from debutant 2nd row Cpl Trevor 1 RRF prevented a sure try. Trevor really took advantage of his opportunity to be part of BA(G) with any number of good tackles and little bursts, his tight play as well aided BA(G) considerably. BA(G) again scored from turnover ball on their goal line, a little chip over the top was collected and three passes later Lewavakula received the ball on his 22 and then ran the length of the field to score, he added the extras.
|
 |
The Danes finally scored at the death with a good try, unfortunately
for them they were totally out played, Cpl Trevor
was made man of the match, just ahead of Nute,
Ramafono and Tagicakivanua.
|
BA(G) takes a break until 1 Mar where the Danes come to JHQ and play a BA(G) Development game, the full International will then take place 3 Mar again at JHQ. On the 18 March sees the return of Belgium to play BA(G) who will be desperate for victory after there narrow defeats. Any players who believe they are of BA(G) standard should contact Head of Coaching Ian Davies on 72-2725
Scorers:
Gnr Mocesui 2 tries,
Kgsn Tagicakivanua one try,
L/Cpl Lewavakula 2 tries two conversations
