Congratulations to WO2 Dai Williams after it was announced this week (first week of June 2007) that he been promoted to Welsh Rugby Union Premiership Referee.

Dai who completed his referees course in 1979 was reluctant at first to take up the whistle, and began to referee on his return to Germany. Retired as a player to become a referee after playing and refereeing in a 7's Tournament. After joining the Berlin Society, his first appointment was Germany Youth v Poland Youth.

On his return to UK, in 1993, he joined the WRU Districts and ARURS. Operational tours and postings interrupted Dai's refereeing, but he still managed to achieve the WRU Lists in 1996.

Again tours interrupted Dai's commitment to refereeing, but then achieved promotion to the old Welsh Division One. Dai became injured early in the first season of refereeing D1, and was told last season "You have had a good season but you are too old" for premiership, this promotion has come as a pleasant surprise - one year on and one year older.

Dai has many refereeing highlights including CS U23 v English Students at Twickenham, RN v French Navy and two U19 Women's Internationals. His most memorable match was in Bosnia with a match for NZ Army v RWF, when grenades were thrown over the wall whilst the teams warmed up and AK47 were fired overhead whilst the game was inplay!

Congratulations Dai, may there be many more memorable matches!!
