On Friday 18 March the Army Rugby Union was sadly informed of the Death of former Army, Scotland and British & Irish Lions captain Col. Mike Campbell-Lamerton DWR. He was 71.
Mike Campbell-Lamerton, who played his club rugby for The Army, Blackheath, Halifax and London Scottish, was an excellent second-row forward, and proved to be a top class leader of men both on and off the field.
Mike won 13 Army Caps between 1960 and 1966 and captained the team on 6 occasions, during this time the Army were inter-service champions 3 times (1960, 63 and 64). He was also a member of a stylish DWR team that appeared in 5 Army cup finals between 1960 and 1966.
In the 1960 final Mike played alongside his brother and 2 years later appeared with Dennis Shuttleworth almost 20 years before both of their sons represented the Army in the same team.He won 23 caps for Scotland between 1961 and 1966, captaining his country on two occasions, against Wales and Ireland in 1965.Mike also captained the British and Irish Lions on their tour of Australia, New Zealand and Canada in 1966.
At the end of his Army career Mike took up the post of bursar at Balliol College in Oxford. And was later made an Honary Life Vice-President of the ARU.
Three of Mike Campbell-Lamerton’s four children, Jeremy, Michael and Ian, all went on to play rugby for London Scottish, Jeremy (Scots Guards) winning 2 Army caps in 1981 and three Scotland caps in 1986 and 1987.
