Overnight thunderstorms and a soggy 0900 hrs start did not dampen the spirits of those competing in the 2009 VT Inter Corps Tens held at Aldershot on 16 September 2009.

It was clear from the first kick-off that a number of teams were determined to de-throne the Royal Engineers who have held considerable sway at Corps and Army level rugby for the past three seasons.

The Royal Artillery looked very sharp against the Infantry but it was the Royal Logistics Corps, albeit denuded of some key players, that produced the first shock of the morning. Led by veteran Army player Andy Geary the RLC produced a powerful forward display that rocked the Sappers 12pts-3 and then (Lord Kitchener look away now) they went down to the Gunners.

Reaching the VT Final came down to points difference. The Sappers needed to score five tries against the Infantry in their final league game to rescue a place in the final-and that is just what they achieved to set up yet another ding-dong battle against an undefeated RLC side that must have thought it was their day.

After 30 minutes of exciting strammash and great defence neither side had scored. The RLC forwards were still moving with menace but Army prop Rick Reeve was back taking the heavy stuff and Darrell Ball was everywhere-even UBIQUE !

The Sapper backs, shorn of some Army talent but now with a fairer supply of ball, found a new confidence. Gerhard Wessells stepped up a gear and winger Gavin Clegg needed a Suva sandwich to halt his progress and proved more than a handful.

In extra time it was a Stu Butters penalty that earned the three golden points and a Sapper victory for the third year in succession. Lord Kitchener - you may open your eyes now !

The Women's competition was won by the RLC who beat Army Womens 7s Champions (REME) in a great final.

The Army VT Tens is a great competition and invaluable as a season's pipe opener. The forwards have enough heavy duty contact to believe they are not being used as fairies and the fairies have enough space to spread their magic dust all over Queen's Avenue. All in all a great day's rugby and the Sappers, after 180 minutes plus rugby and just one penalty, once more, march on.
