British Army (Germany) XV - Match Reports
Season 2009-2010

BA (G) XV (64) v Luxemburg (5)
JHQ - Sat 26 Sep 09

BA (G) finally kicked off their season with an emphatic win against Luxemburg on a sunny day in JHQ. The training had gone to plan and all was set for a great game of rugby football. Luxemburg started the better side and looked dangerous with the ball in hand, however it was short lived and on the fifth minute of play a cracking try was scored by BA (G) left wing LCpl Apimeleki (200 Sig Sqn LAD). The try was converted by Capt Will Gough (AMS), from the re-start BA (G) was on the offensive again and this momentum never changed for the remainder of the first half. SSgt Bully Bull (1 PWRR LAD), Capt Rob Monk (200 Sig Sqn) and LCpl John Wedlock (1 PWRR) lead from the front and created a platform for the backs to attack and score several first half tries. These were converted by Capt Will Gough. The half time score was 31 - 0 for BA (G).

The half time talk concentrated on cementing the work that had gone well in the first half. The set piece was functioning well and open play saw BA (G) with plenty of “go forward”.

The players were reminded of the intensity level required to beat the opposition and the mental focus to continue with the patterns of play. They were also reminded not to get too complacent. Four changes were made at half time to allow all squad players time on the pitch to show their skill and quality to the coaching staff.

The second half started with BA (G) crossing over the opposition’s try line within the first minute of play. Lt Ben McNeil (SCOTS DG) took over the kicking duties to make the score 38 – 0.

Luxemburg could have given up at this stage, however their determination and drive to develop their rugby was obvious. They hit back with some quality passages of play and stretched the BA (G) defence and on several occasions came close to crossing the BA (G) line. Only last minute tackles stopped them from scoring.

BA (G) continued to play attractive rugby and as the seconds ticked by the tries kept coming. Luxemburg looked tired towards the end of the game, however through determination and team spirit they managed to cross the BA (G) line. The final score was BA (G) 64 - Luxemburg 5.

The BA (G) forward unit had played extremely well, dominating the scrum, lineout and the ruck area which gave the platform for the back line to attack from. Some fine individual performances from Capt Rob Monk, LCpl Si Rooney, LCpl Api Apimeleki and LCpl John Wedlock proved the depth the BA (G) squad has. The after match function was held in the Reaction Forces Mess - Drop Inn Sports Bar.
