Coaching Mission
Season 2009-2010

Coaching in the ARU

As at: 21 Jul 10

  1. Background. An objective within the Army Rugby Union (ARU) Plan is to "maintain a formal coaching structure to improve and thereafter sustain standards throughout the Army". It follows that without a sustainable structure to identify, train, develop and mentor coaches the standard of rugby within the Army will stagnate. Coaches are the facilitators and indeed catalysts who generate innovation and drive improvement at all levels within the game. Coaching within the ARU is coordinated by the ARU Coaching Committee whose primary role is to provide a structured approach to coaching in order to develop the standard of coaching and therefore rugby within the Army.

  2. Mission. The ARU Coaching Committee is to create, manage and develop a network of qualified rugby coaches within the Army in order to support the further development of rugby from Community rugby to the Representative level within the ARU.

  3. Concept. By generating a network of coaches within the Community Game through a wide reaching programme of courses it will be possible to identify individuals with the ability, experience and enthusiasm that might be "tracked" towards further training, development and mentoring for involvement through to the Representative Level of Army Rugby. The key and therefore main effort, is to develop interest in coaching at the Community level of the game.

  4. Organisation. The ARU Coaching Committee will coordinate ARU Coaching through the Executive Committee Meeting and is structured as follows:

    Appointment Name Email
Chairman Coaching Colonel ADM Thomson (Allan) allan.thomson529@mod.uk
Honorary Secretary Major A Lewis (Arwyn) arwyn.lewis668@mod.uk
Honorary Treasurer Captain E Cameron (Cam) ewen.cameron304@mod.uk
Chairman of Coaching Development WO2 Bamsey (Taff) taffbamz@yahoo.co.uk
    Coaching Resources & Plan TBA

  5. Execution. The ARU Coaching Committee is to facilitate a 5 Stage approach to the development of coaching within the ARU.

    1. Stage 1. The ARU Coaching Committee is to organise, advertise, promote and execute ARU sponsored Level 1 RFU Coaching Courses in order to promote wide involvement within the ARU coaching network.

    2. Stage 2. Provide a network of ARU Coaching Mentors in order to develop the ability of the Level 1 ARU Coaches and identify potential coaching talent to "track" to further training.

    3. Stage 3. The ARU Coaching Committee is to organise, advertise, promote and execute ARU sponsored Level 2 RFU Coaching Courses in order to develop and improve the ARU coaching network. RFU Level 1/2 courses are paid for by the delegates who in turn claim 80% of their fee back through their Standard Learning Credits.

    4. Stage 4. Provide a network of ARU Coaching Mentors in order to develop the ability of the Level 2 ARU Coaches and identify potential coaching talent to "track" to further training.

    5. Stage 5. Sponsor selected coaches for attendance on Level 3-5 RFU Courses in order to generate those coaches required by the Representative game.

    6. Throughout. In addition the ARU Coaching Committee is to:

      1. Issue an Annual Business Plan through the ARU.
      2. Measure output against the Balance Scorecard on an annual basis.
